Christmas traditions & customs in Mexico

Several weeks before Christmas, elaborately decorated market stalls or puestos are set up in the plazas of every town and city. Some people travel for days from remote areas to get to these markets. The puestos offer crafts of every conceivable kind, foods such as cheese, bananas, nuts, and cookies, and flowers such as orchids and poinsettias.

The poinsettia is native to Mexico and is believed to have first been used in connection with Christmas in the 17th century when Mexican Franciscans included the flowers in their Christmas celebration. Continue reading Christmas traditions & customs in Mexico

Cozumel Island – Mexico

Cozumel Mexico is the biggest island in Mexico, located on the Yucatan Peninsula (East side of México, in the Caribbean) with an extension of 392 square km, 28 miles long and 10 miles wide. It is separated from the Yucatan Peninsula by the Yucatan channel which is 12 miles wide. Cozumel is located on 20° 31′ lat N and 86° 56′ long W.

The town of Cozumel is called San Miguel. Most of the population of the Island resides in the town of San Miguel, on the west coast of the Island facing mainland.

Cozumel, with a population of a little over 95,000, now welcomes more than 4,000,000 visitors every year and is considered one of the most important tourist destinations in México. With Luxury hotels and first class facilities and services, Cozumel offers its visitors a wide variety of things to do and places to stay. About Mexico City

Mexico City is geographically located in the Valley of Mexico. This valley, also known as the Valley of the Damned is a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico. It has an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,349 feet). The Federal District of Mexico City is situated in central-south Mexico and it is surrounded by the state of Mexico on the west, north and east, and by the state of Morelos on the south. The city covers an area of around 1,485 km2 (571 sq mi) with the elevation of 2,240 m (7,349 ft).

Climate

Mexico City is situated in the tropical zone and lies at an altitude of 7,240 feet (2,230 m) above sea level. This high altitude largely determines the climate of Mexico City. The city experiences hot summers and mild winters with an annual average temperature of 640 F (180C). It has very small seasonal changes. January is the coldest month and May is the warmest month while rainfall occurs mainly between June and October.
